The Port of Rotterdam Authority welcomes the Green Deal presented by the European Commission in December 2019. ‘It is good that Europe has ambitious plans to combat climate change, because the challenges are huge’, stated Allard Castelein, Port of Rotterdam Authority CEO. ‘The objective of 50 to 55% CO₂ reduction by 2030 brings Europe in line with The Netherlands’ ambition, which contributes to a level playing field for companies across Europe.’

NEWS 19 December 2019



The Municipality of Rotterdam and the Port of Rotterdam Authority have started a trial on 13 December to supply small sea-going vessels with electricity on Parkkade in the center of Rotterdam. The vessels will then not need to run their diesel generators to generate power for use on board, resulting in reduced air pollution and noise. The trial will last around five months. Five different systems will be tested during this period. The size and setup of this trial make it unique in the world.

NEWS 12 December 2019



The Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management recently installed an air quality sensor on Splitsingsdam at the Port of Rotterdam’s Maas Entrance. An application with real-time readings displays vessel emissions for inspectors when vessels enter or leave the port. This is one of the additional measures ILT is taking to monitor sulphur dioxide emissions from shipping.

The new low-sulphur bunker oil VLSFO (Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil with a maximum 0.5% sulphur) has become extremely popular in Rotterdam, Europe’s largest bunker port. Half of all November bunker sales were for VLSFO. This became apparent from the bunkering notifications via the Port of Rotterdam Authority’s TimeToBunker App.

IMO2020 is approaching rapidly. Shipping companies have various options to comply with the new standards. They can either switch to low-sulphur fuel or install scrubbers to filter the sulphur from the exhaust gases released during the combustion of high-sulphur heavy fuel oil. Vessels are well-served in Rotterdam, even for the latter case.

NEWS 28 November 2019



Today, Fortec BV completed the earlier announced divestment of its terminals in Amsterdam and Hamburg to First State Investments. This divestment was announced on 15 August 2019.

The total agreed transaction value of the terminals in Amsterdam and Hamburg is around EUR 600 million, including a contingent consideration of EUR 15 million which is subject to certain revenue conditions. At completion, the transaction generates a cash inflow for Fortec BV of approximately EUR 555 million. The total exceptional gain after taxation will be around EUR 190 million, to be recorded in the third quarter of 2019.
